Acupuncture and Pain Management

Pain management acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. There are a variety of specific pain conditions acupuncture has been used on. These various conditions include carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache/migraine, lower-back pain, postoperative dental pain, tennis elbow, neck pain, menstrual cramps, osteoarthritis/knee pain and myofascial pain.

Pain management acupuncture has also been looked into for its use in arm and shoulder pain, temporomandibular joint (jaw) dysfunction, and pregnancy-related back and pelvic pain with positive results.

Acupuncture Side Effects and Risks

When acupuncture is performed by an experienced practitioner using sterile needles it is generally considered safe. There have been relatively few complications from acupuncture that have been reported. While serious adverse events related to acupuncture are rare, they can include infections and punctured organs. This is usually the result of seeing an inexperienced practitioner, or one not using properly sterilized needles.

It can also be noted that there are fewer adverse effects associated with acupuncture than one may find with many standard drug treatments that include anti-inflammatory medication or steroid injections. This is particularly true when these drug treatments are used for painful musculoskeletal conditions including fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, and tennis elbow. →Back To Home Page
